Thermic Tablets- Montessori

The Thermic Tablets are Sensorial apparatus of the classroom that are designed to help a child refine their thermal sense. In other words, distinguishing differences in temperature!
This comes in a polished wooden box with 6 compartments to hold each of the pair of tablets. The tablets are made of different natural materials like glass, slate, cork, steel, wood, and felt. These materials look and feel different, but the sense the child will be isolating here is temperature.

PURPOSE
To develop a child’s awareness of the different temperature “feel” of materials in the environment caused by the different thermal conductivity of the materials.

Direct
To refine the thermic sense.

Control of Error
In the material: the substance and color being different for each tablet.

PRESENTATION
Use only the two most contrasting pairs (felt and steel)
Sanitize hands before touching the material.

Carry the box to the work area and place it in the center of the mat.
Remove the lid and place it in the upper left corner of the work area.
Remove tablets one at a time by grasping the top edges with a 3-finger-grip.
Lifting tablet from the box, grasping bottom edge with a 3-finger-grip when it clears the box
Arrange from left to right in a horizontal line

Touch the index and third finger of the dominant hand to the center of each tablet, moving from left to right, slowly and thoughtfully
Touch each of the tablets once in the center until you find a match.

This exercise can be provided for the feet using a 12 cm2 square made of tile, cork, wood, slate, plastic, metal or marble
Encourage the child to walk on grass, sand, a path and other textures with bare feet, children in pairs can carefully lead each other when blindfolded.
