Training for Montessori teachers, it’s a complicated thing. You learn about the materials and the philosophy, but the world is not the same everywhere. A teacher who is trained in a country with high living standards, is she prepared to teach in a place with limited resources? The training activities, they must not just be about the ideal. They must be about the reality. A good training activity should be about problem-solving. You are a teacher in India. The classroom is very small, and there are many children. What do you do? The training should not just tell you the solution. It should give you the tools to find the solution yourself. But most trainings, they are not doing this. They are too focused on the perfect environment. They forget that the environment, it is not always perfect. This is a big problem. The teacher is not a robot. She is a human being. And the children, they are human too. The training must reflect this reality. A very confusing and illogical one. The teachers, they are the key to the whole thing, but we are not training them right. A very big problem. The manuals, they are old. The world, it is new. The training must bridge this gap, but it is not. A very big problem.
The Illusion of a Universal Method
Many training centers, they teach that Montessori is a universal method. That it works the same way everywhere. But this is an illusion. The method is the same, but the implementation, it is very different. A high-quality training activity must show the teacher this difference. It must show them that a classroom in one country, it is not the same as a classroom in another country. It must teach them to observe, but not just the child, but the culture. The training must teach empathy. It must teach them to be flexible. To adapt. But adaptation is not the same as changing the method. It is a very thin line. A lot of people, they cross it without knowing. The trainers, they must be very, very smart to teach this. And a lot of them, they are not. This is a very big problem. The training is a very important part of the whole system. A very crucial part. But if it is not done right, then the whole system, it will fail. A very simple but very important truth. We are not paying enough attention to this. We are too focused on the materials, but the materials, they are just the tools. The real work, it is in the heart and mind of the teacher. The training, it must focus on this. A very confusing but very important point.
Beyond the Materials: The Real Training
The materials, they are easy to learn. You can learn them from a book. But the real training is about the spirit. It’s about the observation. It’s about the prepared adult, not the prepared environment. The prepared adult is the one who can adapt. The one who can see the child for who they are, not for who the book says they should be. A high-quality training activity, it must be about this. It must be about the inner work of the teacher. It must be about reflection. It must be about a journey. The materials, they are just the tools. The journey, it is the real training. This is a confusing thing to explain. A very confusing one. The teachers, they are the ones who make the difference. The materials, they are just there to help. But the training, it is not teaching this. It is teaching the materials, but it is forgetting the teacher. This is a very big mistake. A very big problem for the future of education. A very sad thing to see.
