Magawa, a giant African pouched rat, was awarded the PDSA’s Gold Medal for his “lifesaving bravery and devotion” after discovering 39 landmines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance in the past seven years, according to the charity.Trained as a HeroRAT by Belgian charity APOPO, Magawa is the first rat to win a PDSA award for valour and the first non-canine to win the Gold Medal.
