Introduction:
Intelligence is the special quality that reflects in one’s behaviour. Understanding skill, logical thinking power, impression capacity, speed, mind control, vigilance, problem solving skill, abstract thinking etc. are the symbols of intelligence. Brilliancy, intellect, wisdom, technique, cleverness etc. words we used to substitute intelligence. According to D Wechsler, intelligence is the capacity of a person in all ways to think logically, act positively and make harmony effectively with different environments.
Howard Gardner
The famous American scientist Howard Gardner, approached intelligence on the basis of three ideas (Multiple Intelligence Theory):
a. Intelligence is not a single unit. Different Intelligences are there. They all are independent.
b. The status of one intelligence part may differ from the status of other intelligence.
c. Different intelligences interact with each other and joints and work together to solve a problem.
Gardner explains about nine types of intelligence. It is not in the same quantity in all people. But, in all people these have small ratios. He says that, absence of any intelligence in any one may distort intelligence and personality. Situations determine and introduce the perfection of intelligence in all people.
a. Linguistic Intelligence: All people have an inborn language device and people living in any culture have the capacity to use language. The language skill device is situated in the Broca and Wernicke parts of the brain. Deaf people get their own language with the help of this device. The combining skill of sounds, the hearing capacity, rhythm, the meaning of words, usage of exact words, reading, writing, timely usage of words, speed, speaking, humour, creativity etc. are the functions and parts of language intelligence. Writers, Public speakers, journalists etc. having this intelligence more.
b. Logical and Mathematical Intelligence: Gardner says that logical thinking, finding the mutual relationship between ideas, abstract thinking etc. are done with the help of this intelligence. Skill of problem solving, keep the order and system, involving in observations and experiments, self-checking and make sure, scientific way of evaluation, forming conclusions, guessing, finding questions and doubts, handling logical and mathematical problems, finding and understanding the links logically, untie traps etc. are the symbols of the presence of this intelligence in a person. Scientists, Mathematicians, Chess Players etc. have this intelligence more.
c. Spatial Intelligence: This intelligence helps a person to mark a particular place, guess the way, know the direction, to understand the 2 dimension picture in 3 dimensions, to picture a thing in different angles etc. This intelligence helps blind people to identify things. In short, this intelligence helps a person to make mental pictures and identify its position, figure, order, direction, promptness etc. from the visual universe and things. Its position is on the right side of the brain.
d. Musical Intelligence: It is an intelligence to make manifestations in rhythm and in melody and to enjoy music. Identify the sound, rhythm, melody etc., enjoy music, find happiness in music, sing songs, compose music, play musical instruments, approach music scientifically etc. are the symbols of this intelligence.
e. Bodily Kinetic Intelligence: It is intelligence to control and express skill in body movements. This intelligence helps to control, make flexible, compile and achieve speed of the movements related to small and big muscles.
The left part of the brain controls the right part movements and the right part of the brain controls the left part of body movements. Patience, flexibility, speed, permanence, planning, compiling, endurance etc. are the symptoms of this intelligence. This intelligence is more in actors, sports people, dancers, martial artists etc.
f. Interpersonal Intelligence: This intelligence helps one to interact with others, to understand others, to form behaviours by interpreting others behaviours etc. Everyone needs to make behaviours suitable to society by considering others feelings, thoughts, mental condition, likes and dislikes, motive factors, stands, needs, purpose etc. This is an important intelligence needed for success in life and social development.
g. Intra personal Intelligence: This intelligence helps to identify one’s own power and deficiencies, control emotions and mental tensions and increases confidence and will power. People having this intelligence can approach criticisms creatively, approach life pleasantly and peacefully, think independently, self-evaluate and improve etc.
h. Naturalistic Intelligence: Enjoy nature, find out the relationship between nature and life, make harmony with nature and other co-creatures etc. are the outcomes of this Naturalistic intelligence.
i. Existential Intelligence: It helps one to find out the meaning of his life and make his life meaningful. Understanding about the existence of a person in this universal setup will make his life successful and model. Great people like an ascetic, philosopher, Yogi etc. have this intelligence more.
The basic ideas and uses of Multiple Intelligence Theory
1. Man having intelligence types that cannot be measured with conventional examinations.
2. All intelligence parts are present in all people. But its ratio and effectiveness is not equal.
3. Different intelligent faces exist independently and work together.
4. It is very important to give chances to all people to develop their multi intelligence for individual and social development.
5. All intelligent parts need to develop because all are worked together.
6. Give priority for the development of a specific intelligent part of a person showing interest and aptitude. Give more chances and activities for the development of that part.
7. If anyone gets positive opportunities in any intelligent part, he gets progress in that part.
8. Inborn Intelligence faces may go backward without getting positive opportunities.
9. By observation and evaluation we can find out which intelligent face keeps on top.
10. Arrange different learning activities in any idea or subject by considering the multi-faceted possibility of intelligence.
11. Multiple intelligent faces relate to each other. So the Integrated approach is suitable for learning.
12. Find possibilities of music, work experience, observation, physical exercise, mathematics, acting, thinking, evaluation, discussion, debate, research etc. in all subject & learning activities.
13. Encourage all talents in children by seeing that all are part of their personality.
Mentally Retarded (MR)
A person having no intelligence growth on the basis of age compared with a normal person, we can call him as Mentally Retarded. It is not a guilt or deficiency. So we do not isolate these people. These people can generally be grouped in to three categories:
a. Persons who can be provided education
b. Persons who can be trained for certain skills and activities.
c. Persons who completely need others’ help.
The first two categories can be made self-sufficient by giving education and non-technical training. For these people there are enough special schools having trained caretakers in our country. So referring these people to that school is very important.
